Addiction comes in many forms and the most popular of these is illegal drugs. The continued use of addicting substances such as these might result the responsibilities you have like your job, your health and relationship with other people. Change of behavior of an addicted person may not be noticeable to them but it causes problems to him and the people around him.

The number of addicted persons are increasing greatly and something needs to be done to stop this. Prevention and intervention should be done like educating communities on addiction in order to make them understand the negative effects that could happen because of it. Most of the victims of drug abuse are children who are lured into using one by their friends because of peer pressure. Parents should help in educating their children about the side effects of these activities to their body and mind. Here are some things that parents can teach to their children.

Learn to say no to your friends and do not be afraid to do so. Kids are afraid to say no to people because they do not want to receive a negative reaction from them. If they tell you everyone is doing it, that is a lie. Make your own decisions and never allow someone to pressure you in doing what is not right.

Carefully choose your friends and avoid those friends who take illegal drugs and drink alcohol. It is alright to get along without the need of doing the things these people do. Negative peer pressure must be avoided but instead actively join school or community activities. Do the things you love such as arts, music or sports.

Make connections with adults such as your parents and tell them about you and your life and learn to rely on them. You can tell them anything including your decisions about drugs or alcohol use. They would be able to give advises based on the experiences they had on these things. It is important that they would be able to trust you so that they will become confident in the decisions you will make.

Learn about the negative effects of drug and alcohol abuse that it could bring to you and your body including your relationship with other people. Misconceptions about it has been shared by different people so get to know which one is a fact or not. Share the information you have found and become a good role model to others.

Be prepared when going to a party or anywhere with your friends and plan ahead. Have someone you can call on anytime you need them. In this way, you can call for help if someone is pressuring you to do what you do not want to do or you are becoming a victim of their substance use and rescue you from them.

When you or friends of yours are already having problems with substances abuse, make sure to immediately get help. There are organizations that could help you get rid of the problem. You are not alone in facing these problems.
